Clinical Significance

IgM constitutes about 6% of the total immunoglobulin concentration in serum and has functions similar to that of IgG.

The Primary functions of IgM in the immune response are the agglutination of pathogens and the activation of the classical complement pathway.

Measurement of IgM therefore aids in the diagnosis of abnormal protein metabolism and the body?s lack of ability to resist infectious agents.
