Clinical Significance
The serum iron concentration reflects principally the concentration of ferric iron bound to serum transferrin. Iron deficiency is one of the most prevalent human disorders. In adults iron deficiency is often symptomatic of chronic blood loss. Iron deficiency results in deficient haem synthesis with the subsequent symptoms of anaemia due to tissue hypoxia.
Serum iron concentrations may also be decreased in acute or chronic inflammatory disorders such as acute infection, immunisation or myocardial infarction. Elevated serum iron concentrations occur in iron overload disorders such as haemochromatosis.
