Clinical Significance
B2Microglobulin is a low molecular weight protein (11800D) found of the surface of all cells except erythrocytes and the trophoblastic layer of the placenta. It is a constituent of the light chain of human histocompatibility antigens HLA, A, B and C. B2M is found on T and B cells and in tumour associated transplantation antigens. B2M may control the expression of antigens on the cell surface and their biosynthesis.
In healthy individuals, B2M is synthesized at a rate of
9 mg/hours and is eliminated mostly by the kidneys.
In various myelomas, B2M levels have been related to tumour mass, prognosis, disease activity and effectiveness of treatment. Levels below 4 mg/l indicate better prognosis than levels above 20 mg/l.
