Clinical Significance

Measurement of alpha-1-antitrypsin levels in serum and plasma aid in the diagnosis of several conditions including juvenile and adult cirrhosis of the liver. In addition, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency has been associated with pulmonary emphysema.
